USDA program funds farming in 44 states

Government-backed loans to new farmers have more than doubled over the past 10 years, according to the Huffington Post. These included various programs created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that provided individual farmers and farm-based companies with USDA loans and grants.

The USDA continued its farmer support last week, when it announced its intention to provide $40.2 million in grants to farmers, ranchers and farmer-controlled rural business ventures with a focus on green living.

Specifically, 298 recipients across 44 states and Puerto Rico will receive assistance via the USDA's Value-Added Producer Grant program.

"This funding will promote small business expansion and entrepreneurship opportunities by providing local businesses with access capital, technical assistance and new markets for products and services," said USDA deputy secretary Kathleen Merrigan.

The funds are intended to be used for feasibility studies, business plans and working capital for value-added farm products and farm-based renewable energy projects.

One company, Green Mountain Organic Creamery in North Ferrisburgh, Vermont, will receive a working capital grant to market its organic dairy products. The company was awarded as the Vermont Dairy of the Year in 2011.
