Three-quarters of businesses lose computer data

Small businesses are using computers for more things - connecting with consumers through social media, bookkeeping, communicating with staff in multiple locations, managing product inventory, the list goes on.

Still, as a recent report from Check Point Software and the Ponemon Institute notes, security is not a big concern for many small companies, despite the fact that their machines are vital to operations. As many as 77 percent of the polled organization have lost data over the past year due to stolen or lost equipment, network attacks and insecure mobile devices.

"We understand that data security and compliance are often at the top of the CISO's list. However, if you look at the drivers for data loss, the majority of incidents are unintentional," said Oded Gonda, vice president of network security products at Check Point Software Technologies. "In order to move data loss from detection to prevention, businesses should consider integrating more user awareness and establish the appropriate processes to gain more visibility and control of information assets."

By leveraging commercial loans to upgrade computer systems and invest in safety measures, entrepreneurs will be better able to ensure their companies' survival.
