Small businesses increasingly tap online sites to find new talent

In the past, many businesses have taken a passive approach to finding new talent - they simply let potential hires turn in their applications at will. With the economy and small business lending improving, however, they are taking a more active approach and are increasingly heading online to seek talented prospects out.
For example, Rob Waldron, president and CEO of Curriculum Associates, told the Wall Street Journal that he frequently uses social networks - such as LinkedIn - to aid with the employment search. He then contacts those he believes would be strong assets to the company.
"I’ve met personally with more than 800 people in the last two years because this is the best time to hire talent," Waldron explained to the source. "I will find a job for outstanding talent even if I don't have an opening. I try to hire people, not positions."
LinkedIn can often provide a better understanding of a prospect than a simple resume. For example, the social network also shows pictures of the applicant as well as other hobbies outside of work, which could influence the hiring decision.
