North Carolina town moves forward with project following USDA loan

A $5 million USDA loan was recently provided to the town of Fletcher, North Carolina, which will allow it to move forward with an $7.7 million area improvement project, the Times-News reports.

Fletcher received a Community Facility Direct Loan, which will provide funds to construct a town hall and public safety building. The structures will be part of the Heart of Fletcher project, an initiative the town has been working on for years.

According to the town of Fletcher website, the Heart of Fletcher project aims to develop a mixed-use, downtown business district that will feature small businesses, professional and commercial space, retail stores and restaurants. It will also connect the town's greenway system and parks.

"This is something the town has been working on for many years now, and this $5 million puts us where we need to be to go forward with our new town center," Mayor Bill Moore said, as quoted by the Times-News. "This is going to create a lot of new jobs and growth in this area, and that's exactly what we need."

Moore added that in addition to the construction, the funds will allow the town to extend a street and acquire land.
