Hotel continues construction amid fears

The renderings of a new 27-story hotel in New York between Broadway and Eighth Avenue were recently shown to a Community Board 5 committee, despite complaints from neighbors about looming construction issues, DNAInfo reports.

The hotel has yet to be branded, but has already received motel financing and permission from the Department of Buildings to begin construction. However, the developer recently placed plans on hold by attempting to add an additional 24,000 square feet and increase the rise to 34 stories.

At the rendering, developers showed a building that was "set back from the curb, narrowing as it rises and constructed of a material resembling brown brick." The hotel also plans to add a bar and restaurant on the main floor.

The potential extended construction concerned those living in nearby facilities who fear may be harmed from falling debris. The DOB has already logged 15 complaints against the property since work began in May, but none have resulted in fines.

The hotel is being developed by the Moinian Group, one of the country's largest privately held real estate firms with a plethora of loft buildings in Midtown South and the Flatiron District, according to its website.
