Budgeting is necessary to small business success

Small business owners need to wear a lot of hats to successfully manage their companies, and even then, some tasks may slip by unattended to. For example, many entrepreneurs take a "wait and see" approach to their budgeting, only addressing it when it becomes an issue.

However, as American Express' Open Forum recently suggested, small business owners should take a more active role when it comes to managing their cash flow. This will help them grow their companies and eliminate stressful and demoralizing situations that arise from a failure to make ends meet.

"You really need to have a benchmark for what you think will happen," Ted Hurlbut, a director at business management firm Hurlbut & Associates, told the source. "Forecast out by month, category and what revenue you anticipate based on history - the more detailed the better. Just write it down on paper. These forecasts can end up giving you the budgets to make purchases for your business."

Thanks to greater access to commercial loans, small business owners should have even less issues budgeting their expenses now. However, that still doesn't make budgeting of any less importance.
